Missouri Rotary Collects 17,000
Shoes for Orphans

In its seventh year collecting shoes for orphans and at-risk children, Missouri Rotary District 6040 'stepped up' again to donate more than 17,000 pairs of shoes, 1,300 pairs of socks and $6,028.40 to benefit Shoes for Orphan Souls.

Missouri Rotary remains the single largest contributing organization to the shoe campaign, collecting 155,000 pairs of shoes and $54,000 in cash since the first shoe drive in 2001.

"We could not ask for a better partner than Missouri Rotary," said Rachel Garton, director of Shoes for Orphan Souls. "They give more and more every year, and they never ask for anything in return. They just know that there's a need and they do something about it."

Because of their passion and longevity, Garton said, "it's opened the doors for more Rotary clubs to get involved. When you have half a state getting involved in something, and having great success for eight years, it commands the attention of other clubs."

The shoe delivery will arrive via United Parcel Service April 30 at the Buckner Center for Humanitarian Aid just in time for a series of international shipments to Romania, Latvia, Peru and Ethiopia.

"We were running low on shoes in the warehouse," Garton said. "This donation will ensure that we have enough shoes to ship. And on top of that, the money they raised will help get the shoes there."

UPS provided its services free of charge to transport the shoes from the clubs' district conference in Kansas City, Mo. to Dallas.

Since 1999, Shoes for Orphan Souls has delivered more than 1.6 million pairs of shoes and socks to orphan children in more than 65 countries. Shoes for Orphan Souls is the largest humanitarian aid project of Buckner International.
